  1. smallest of the Iles du Salut, off French
  2. Guiana, 43 km, 27 mi NW of Cayenne. The group
  3. of islands was collectively and popularly
  4. known by the name Devil's Island and formed a
  5. penal colony notorious for its terrible
  6. conditions. 
  7. Alfred Dreyfus was imprisoned here 1895-99.
  8. Political prisoners were held on Devil's
  9. Island, and dangerous criminals on St Joseph,
  10. where they were subdued by solitary
  11. confinement in tiny cells or subterranean
  12. cages. The largest island, Royale, now has a
  13. tracking station for the French rocket site
  14. at Kourou.
